Game of the Week

   1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 {Offering a Kings Indian or Grunfeld} 3. g3 Bg7 4. Bg2 O-O 5.   Nc3 {Both sides have developed quickly and we have reached King's Indian   territory} d6 6. Nf3 Nbd7 {An interesting move, Black wants to advance either   the 'e' or 'c' pawn but without allowing a Queen trade} 7. O-O e5 8. e4 {   Nice move, in general neither side wants to break the central tension} Re8 9.   d5 {White blocks the centre and hopes to dominate with his extra space} Nc5 10.   Ne1 a5 {Another important move, making the b4 push more difficult to achieve}   11. Be3 b6 {Another defender for the Knight and a possible new diagonal for   the light squared Bishop} 12. f3 {another dual purpose move, e4 is protected   and the Black pieces are denied the g4 square, both sides are playing good   moves and showing understanding of the opening} Bd7 13. Qd2 Qc8 14. Nc2 {   Both players are looking for a pawn break but where will it come from?} Bh3 {   Nh5 looking to play f5 was better} 15. Na3 {Excellent move, White wants a   Knight on b5 but prefers to keep the more active horse on c3} Bxg2 16. Kxg2 {   White must stand better, as the light squares on the queenside will be excellent outposts} Qd7 17. Rad1 Nh5 {Very nice, Black is now ready for f5} 18.   Nab5 f5 {The game is going to get messy, the question is which King will be   the safest?} 19. exf5 gxf5 20. b3 {maybe a3 to threaten b4 was better} Rf8 {   my engine gives this as level, White has control of the queenside and Black   has open files on the kingside} 21. Kh1 {Nice, White anticipates the 'g' file   opening} Nf6 22. Qg2 Kf7 {I think the King would have been better on h8,   keeping the 'f' and 'g' files for his pieces} 23. g4 f4 24. Bxc5 bxc5 {White   is now better, the Knight on b5 is just annoying and the other is looking at   e4, Black needs to defend very well to survive} 25. g5 {Brilliant, White   forces the Knight back} Ne8 26. Ne4 Rg8 {Black can only wait for the attack}   27. Rg1 Bf6 {A clever move taking advantage of the pin} 28. Qf2 {A really   strong move, breaking the pin and giving the Queen entry on the dark squares.   Nxc7 was also found by the engine} (28. Nxc7 Qxc7 29. Qh3 Bd8) 28... Bd8 29.   Qh4 Qf5 30. Rg2 {looking to double Rooks, Rg4 was also good} Qg6 31. Qg4 {   White is winning, but, how does he break through?} a4 32. h4 h5 33. Qd7+ Kf8 {   Black has defended but is now very passive and can only await to see what will   happen} 34. Rdg1 Rg7 35. Qc6 Rb8 {The position is almost Zugzwang, probably   White can simply take on a4} 36. Nf6 {White made this move quite quickly,   possibly because his opponent was very short of time, but now Black has a way   out} Bxf6 37. gxf6 Qxf6 38. Rxg7 Qxh4+ {Chess can be cruel, for most of the   middle game the Black King was a target, now roles are reversed} 39. Kg2 Nxg7   40. Qxc7 Qg3+ {Black can now force a perpetual} 41. Kf1 Qxf3+ 42.
